High School++

"High school Life ay walang kasing saya" -- Sharon Cuneta
Way back 2004 when the BRIDGE program has been implemented by the Department of Education for students who still need assistance before enrolling as a Freshman in High School a lot of parents probably got angry about it, they said it's just an additional expense for their family. That's why the implementation became optional until it disappeared. Now a new program which aims to expand the schooling year in high school will soon be implemented, or maybe not. The government is planning to add 2 more years in high school so that'll be 6 years. They said that the global standard for basic education is 12 years and only the Philippines has the shortest cycle of this basic education from any other country of Asia. The program will give the students the time to read and to write and to do the standard exercise sets for the global curriculum.

True that they are, and somehow I agree to this program to add 2 more years in high school 'coz the intention of the government was clear, they just want to have a good quality education for our students, to be ready and armed with sufficient knowledge and as to follow the so-called "Global Standard for Basic Education". Yes, it'll be an additional expense for the parents but such amount is nothing compared to the knowledge that will be gained by their children, I'm not saying this because I already graduated from high school I'm saying  this because I found it very helpful for our youth.

However, education in the Philippines has been a problem ever since because of our corrupt government, there are many schools which lacks classrooms, chairs, books, and inappropriate number of students per section and a lot more resulting to inferiority of our educational system. If this program will be implemented a number of students in a section will dramatically increase because we're not sure if a student will pass to enroll to a higher year plus the upcoming students. The government should first pay attention to facilities of the school, more chairs, more class rooms, more books, more teachers, and just the equal number of students per section for a much better learning.

In a nutshell, the problem is in the student. We should not rely the search for knowledge to our teachers all the time, it depends to the willingness of the student to learn. There are still a lot of things to discover in this world, soon they will find it out and realize that it wasn't so easy. But why do they worry? Isn't it true that high school life ay walang kasing saya?

  1. I think there's nothing wrong with adding 2 more years to high school. However, how can we be sure that it'll work? And yes, it would add to the expenses shouldered by the parents or guardians of the kids.

    Bottomline, it's all in the student. 6 years in high school, or even 10years in high school is NOT enough to educate a student who is NOT willing to learn.

    But yes, I am very much open to the idea. Why don't we give this a try? :)
